We have a brand new home, and a brand new dining table. The first thing you envision in a new home is how you will spend the holidays there with family and friends, gathered around the table. When we chose our dining set, we made sure it could sit 8-10 easily. The dining room was designed with a glam feel, bits of sparkle and gold in our modern, industrial, farmhouse style home. This year I’m making a custom, one of a kind table scape including natural textures, painted fabrics, and those hints of sparkle that can transition seamlessly from fall to winter holidays. Here is how it all came together:

Step 1: Take your fabric and dampen with water. I held my napkins under the faucet and rung out as much water as possible. The water will help the paint to saturate the fabric all the way through. I chose a plain white napkin and placemat, but you could use an old set that no longer fits your decor

Step 2: With your Dixie Belle synthetic paintbrush and paint color of your choice, layout the damp fabric on a protected surface (the paint will bleed through). I chose Sawmill Gravy to give me a natural linen feel that coordinates with the natural textures I am using. Brush the paint on your fabric, spritz with water if needed to get even, saturated coverage. Flip over and do the reverse as well. Set out and allow your fabric to dry completely. Add a second coat, once dry, if you desire more coverage. Your fabric will dry with a rigid feel, don’t worry, heat setting will loosen it right back up!

Step 3: Choose a custom stencil. I am using an Asian inspired lattice, a mandala, and an acanthus leaf stencil that I had in my collection. I liked the geometric and the floral leaf to give me varying patterns. Place your stencil, and using your Redesign with Prima stencil brush and Dixie Belle Gold Digger, stencil your design using minimal paint and a dabbing motion to prevent stencil bleeding around your edges. Stencil both sides and get a reversible fabric to change up the look with ease. Look at the shimmer of those metallics! Lay your fabric out for stenciling to dry.

Step 4: Once dry, use an iron on a hot setting and go over all the areas of your fabric, this will heat set the design. Cover with a rag to iron. You are essentially creating a custom fabric using the paints as your dyes. The heat embeds it into the fibers and makes your design permanent. Your fabric will have the feel of a soft suede.

Step 5: Launder your custom linens on a gentle cycle and dry, warm iron if needed. Colors may fade slightly in wash, this is a hand died fabric look. How do I know this works? Ask the majority of my wardrobe that has gotten paint on it that is impossible to remove! If it stays when I dont want it to, surely it will stay when I do!

I combined my faux linen and metallic textiles with the wooden plate chargers from Redesign with Prima, adding a custom floral decor transfer for bits of color, sealed in flat clear coat for durability.

I pulled out the color in the transfer with my glassware as well. The final product is an eye catching, completely customized table setting that looks warm and inviting!
